font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Let me give the prelude to this sermon by saying this sermon was written in response to the deaths of Nick Dalaly and Harold Tupper.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Harold\u2019s service will be here<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">next Saturday<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">and Nick\u2019s service the last Saturday of the month.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">The details are in the bulletin today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">The Bible has endured in large measure because it has helped men and women deal with the unwelcome<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">This is the subject the Apostle Paul treats as he writes to the Christian church in Corinth.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ the father of all mercies and the God of all comfort who comforts us in all our affliction that we (in turn) may be able to comfort others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Paul knew all too well the stresses and strains people are heir to.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">And while he is not exclusively dealing with grief here, I should like to extract his words and apply them as they relate to grief and loss<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Let me launch out into this subject to point out first and foremost that our faith is bold in dealing with death.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">If you come to church every week it stares you in the face<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"WP TypographicSymbols\"\"><span>B<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">it\u2019s in the hymns, the creeds, the prayers.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">I visited an Episcopal church in Bryn Mawr Pa.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">and to get into the sanctuary you had to walk through the church graveyard.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">I thought that was brilliant&#8211; to remind everyone, young and old, that the clock is ticking.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">I say this about the church because society, in contrast, has a way of denying death.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Even when you see ads on t.v. with older folk as the pitch me and women they always look young and vital.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">George Burns has a lot of great lines about getting older but the best is this one:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"WP TypographicSymbols\"\"><span>A<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">I\u2019m at the age when flowers scare me.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"WP TypographicSymbols\"\"><span>@<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">When our time comes to handle grief as Christians, the subject will not catch us unawares.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">We have heard about death<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Sunday in and Sunday out.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">It is in our prayers, our hymns, our Scriptures.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">When I phoned Sue Dalaly last week to give my sympathy about Nick she said:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"WP TypographicSymbols\"\">&gt;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">We are just passing through.<\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"WP TypographicSymbols\"\">@<\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Now there is wisdom gained from being in church every week.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Every week in worship we are confronted with three questions:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Where did I come from?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Why am I here?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Where am I going?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">So back to I Corinthians 1.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">\u201cBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ the father of all mercies and the God of all comfort who comforts us in all our affliction that we (in turn) may be able to comfort others.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Notice Paul<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"WP TypographicSymbols\"\"><span>=<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">s first emphasis is to fix our gaze on God<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"WP TypographicSymbols\"\"><span>B<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">he does not begin with an analysis of our afflictions, does not launch into a treatise as to whether life is fair or not.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">None of that.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">He begins with who God is and what God does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Blessed be God.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">What an opening for people in distress.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">He moves on to give three different ascriptions of God.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">(1)First, God is the father of our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Nothing is more critical in our seasons of grief than the view we hold of God.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">He is to be understood as the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">Jesus Christ is, in the suggestive phrase of John AT Robinson,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"WP TypographicSymbols\"\">A<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">the human face of God.<\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"WP TypographicSymbols\"\">@<\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">We know how Jesus identifies with our suffering, how he himself suffered for us. We know God stands with us in our grief; precisely because Jesus stands with us in our grief.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.301961); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none; font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.301961); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">(2) Second, He is also the Father of all mercies.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">The Lord God is merciful and gracious we hear in Psalm 103.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">His mercy is from age to age.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">No beginning. No end to God<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; font-family: \"WP TypographicSymbols\"\"><span>=<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">s mercy.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\">It just is. In all times, in all places, in all situations.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);
